SPICE 1, born Robert L. Green, Jr., is a prominent figure in West Coast hip-hop, known for his raw storytelling and uncompromising gangsta rap style. Originally born in Texas, he later moved to Hayward, California, where he began carving out his reputation in the rap scene. His stage name, Spice 1, is said to stand for Sex, Pistols, Indo, Cash, and Entertainment, reflecting the themes he often explored in his music.
Discovered by Bay Area legend Too $hort, Spice 1 quickly rose to recognition with his self-titled debut album in 1992. The record reached #14 on the U.S. R&B chart, and its standout single, “Welcome to the Ghetto”, earned widespread acclaim for its vivid portrayal of street life. His music, often described as hard-edged and fatalistic, captured the harsh realities of urban existence with biting analogies and unflinching honesty.
Spice 1 followed his debut with 187 He Wrote (1993), a darker and more nihilistic project complete with simulated gunfire, cementing his reputation as one of gangsta rap’s most formidable voices. He continued to release a string of influential albums throughout the 1990s, including:
• 1990-Sick (1995)
• The Black Bossalini (aka Dr. Bomb From Da Bay) (1997)
• Immortalised (1999)
